World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and boost additional stats.
Upgrades to gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests Each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a certain amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its basic stats increase in value. The value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, dependent on who you employ and Item upgrades what you do. This is due to the variety of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.
It is also used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear as PvP is restricted at lower levels. The average item level is listed on the character sheet.
Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a measure of the item's damage and its quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when evaluating the inventory of a vendor.
On your PC, you can see the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item. This could result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is typically very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.
However, this isn't the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, as the level of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item are a major part of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modifications that are in turn increased by the player's skill.
Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.
Another method to alter the stats of an item level upgrade is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and are available in all sizes and shapes. The affixes can do things like give the item upgrader kit extra damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing cooldowns) or make the item unique by giving a special name to the item.
All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade menu pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other rerolling methods.
Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll the affixes. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each item will contain at least one stat in that range unless they are an item that is unique, or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. Similar to the base equipment, it must be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves and is thus more useful in early game runs than later ones since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading that increase with each new level of item. They can also be increased by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck, or to increase the Luck of the item up to 140.
Furthermore, certain items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be bought in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Item upgrades are a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..
The luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have a base success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects may be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the item upgrade Upgrader CORE client config.
