Costs
Upgrades come with a few associated costs. The first is the upgrade itself. This cost depends on the item's new ilvl and the amount of perks it will gain and can be costly. Upgrades to higher levels (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) are costly.
The other is the cost of materials needed for an upgrade. The items used are usually either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and over) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable by completing specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). These materials can be found in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.
It takes time to upgrade an item. It can take up to 8 hours depending on the size of the upgrade. The stats that are the base of the upgraded item are calculated based upon its new ilvl and other properties. This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonus, damage dice, and other important statistics. In some cases the upgrade can grant additional perks that can be selected from a list of available perks.
Rarely, the advantages acquired will cost more than one perk slot to acquire; in these situations the upgrade will replace the perks with the highest cost. Sometimes, the upgrader will make other modifications to an item, for example, changing its weapon damage type or or removing an operative or unwieldy property. The cost of these changes is based on the item's new ilvl, and it could require a special substance, such as the adamantine alloy.
Success Rate
The process of upgrading an item level upgrade is dependent on the chance. Like any random system, there is a possibility that it won't succeed. However there are some things that can increase the chances of success. This includes using an item known as an Upgrade Pity, or the addition of additional materials to the upgrade.
An Upgrade Pity is a product you can buy from the smithing NPC in Lost Ark. It increases the chances of a successful upgrade by some percentage. This is similar to the luck bonus certain items offer but is more solid. It can be added to any weapon or armor and can be used up to three times.
You can also add additional materials to the upgrade to increase the chance of success. The materials are displayed in a separate window above the + button. There are however limitations to this, and the largest amount of material that can be added is shown directly above the + button in the UI.
A Blacksmith Blessing or an upgraded version of it can be used to increase the odds of an upgrade being successful. This item is beneficial if you have an Best item upgrader of equipment that has reached the maximum level for its tier, or is close to it. It allows you to upgrade that piece of equipment to the next level without worrying about it breaking.
If an upgrade fails the system will be restored to its original condition. This is usually a downgrade, but could also be an upgrade. Keep an upgrade in reserve until you're close to the maximum level for an item.
Kafra has a number of products that can be used to increase the likelihood of a successful upgrade. You can boost your chances of success by upgrading equipment repeatedly using HD Oridecon and HD Elunium. Similarly, enhancing the chance to receive a Double Mint from Shoe-Minting a maximum of five times will increase the chance of success.
