The Academy's Evolution Site

Depositphotos_218520288_XL-scaled.jpgThe concept of biological evolution is among the most central concepts in biology. The Academies are involved in helping those interested in science to understand evolution theory and how it is permeated throughout all fields of scientific research.

This site provides students, teachers and general readers with a range of learning resources on evolution. It includes key video clips from NOVA and the WGBH-produced science programs on DVD.

Tree of Life

The Tree of Life is an ancient symbol of the interconnectedness of all life. It is seen in a variety of religions and cultures as symbolizing unity and love. It also has practical applications, like providing a framework for understanding the history of species and how they respond to changing environmental conditions.

The first attempts to depict the biological world were based on categorizing organisms based on their physical and metabolic characteristics. These methods, which rely on the collection of various parts of organisms or short fragments of DNA have greatly increased the diversity of a tree of Life2. The trees are mostly composed of eukaryotes, while bacterial diversity is vastly underrepresented3,4.

By avoiding the necessity for 에볼루션 무료체험 direct experimentation and 에볼루션 바카라 체험 observation genetic techniques have enabled us to represent the Tree of Life in a much more accurate way. Particularly, molecular methods enable us to create trees by using sequenced markers such as the small subunit of ribosomal RNA gene.

The Tree of Life has been significantly expanded by genome sequencing. However there is still a lot of biodiversity to be discovered. This is particularly true for microorganisms that are difficult to cultivate and are usually found in one sample5. A recent analysis of all genomes resulted in a rough draft of the Tree of Life. This includes a variety of archaea, bacteria and other organisms that have not yet been isolated, or their diversity is not well understood6.

The expanded Tree of Life can be used to assess the biodiversity of a specific region and determine if certain habitats require special protection. The information can be used in a range of ways, from identifying the most effective remedies to fight diseases to enhancing the quality of crops. This information is also extremely valuable for conservation efforts. It helps biologists discover areas most likely to be home to cryptic species, which may have important metabolic functions and be vulnerable to human-induced change. While funds to safeguard biodiversity are vital but the most effective way to ensure the preservation of biodiversity around the world is for more people in developing countries to be equipped with the knowledge to take action locally to encourage conservation from within.

Phylogeny

A phylogeny (also called an evolutionary tree) illustrates the relationship between species. Scientists can build a phylogenetic chart that shows the evolution of taxonomic categories using molecular information and morphological differences or similarities. Phylogeny plays a crucial role in understanding the relationship between genetics, biodiversity and evolution.

A basic phylogenetic Tree (see Figure PageIndex 10 ) determines the relationship between organisms with similar traits that evolved from common ancestors. These shared traits can be either homologous or analogous. Homologous traits share their evolutionary origins and analogous traits appear similar but do not have the same ancestors. Scientists arrange similar traits into a grouping called a Clade. All organisms in a group share a characteristic, for example, amniotic egg production. They all came from an ancestor with these eggs. A phylogenetic tree is built by connecting the clades to determine the organisms which are the closest to one another.

Scientists make use of DNA or RNA molecular data to create a phylogenetic chart that is more precise and precise. This data is more precise than morphological information and gives evidence of the evolutionary background of an organism or group. Molecular data allows researchers to identify the number of species that have a common ancestor and to estimate their evolutionary age.

The phylogenetic relationship can be affected by a variety of factors that include phenotypicplasticity. This is a type of behavior that changes in response to particular environmental conditions. This can cause a trait to appear more resembling to one species than another, obscuring the phylogenetic signals. However, this issue can be reduced by the use of techniques like cladistics, which combine homologous and analogous features into the tree.

In addition, phylogenetics can help predict the duration and rate of speciation. This information can assist conservation biologists make decisions about the species they should safeguard from the threat of extinction. In the end, it is the preservation of phylogenetic diversity that will result in an ecosystem that is balanced and complete.

Evolutionary Theory

The main idea behind evolution is that organisms develop various characteristics over time as a result of their interactions with their environment. Several theories of evolutionary change have been developed by a variety of scientists, including the Islamic naturalist Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1201-1274) who envisioned an organism developing slowly in accordance with its requirements as well as the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) who conceived the modern hierarchical taxonomy, as well as Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829) who suggested that use or disuse of traits can cause changes that can be passed onto offspring.

In the 1930s & 1940s, theories from various areas, including genetics, natural selection and particulate inheritance, merged to form a modern evolutionary theory. This explains how evolution happens through the variation in genes within the population, and how these variants alter over time due to natural selection. This model, called genetic drift, mutation, gene flow, and sexual selection, 에볼루션 무료체험 is a cornerstone of current evolutionary biology, and is mathematically described.

Recent advances in the field of evolutionary developmental biology have shown how variations can be introduced to a species through genetic drift, mutations, reshuffling genes during sexual reproduction and migration between populations. These processes, as well as others like directional selection and genetic erosion (changes in the frequency of a genotype over time) can result in evolution which is defined by change in the genome of the species over time, and also by changes in phenotype over time (the expression of that genotype in the individual).

Students can gain a better understanding of the concept of phylogeny through incorporating evolutionary thinking throughout all areas of biology. A recent study conducted by Grunspan and colleagues, for instance demonstrated that teaching about the evidence supporting evolution increased students' understanding of evolution in a college biology class. Evolution in Action

Scientists have studied evolution through looking back in the past--analyzing fossils and 에볼루션 무료 바카라에볼루션 바카라 사이트 (Forum.goldenantler.ca) comparing species. They also study living organisms. But evolution isn't just something that happened in the past. It's an ongoing process, happening in the present. Viruses reinvent themselves to avoid new drugs and bacteria evolve to resist antibiotics. Animals alter their behavior in the wake of a changing world. The changes that result are often evident.

However, it wasn't until late 1980s that biologists realized that natural selection can be observed in action as well. The reason is that different characteristics result in different rates of survival and reproduction (differential fitness), and can be passed from one generation to the next.

In the past, if an allele - the genetic sequence that determines color - was present in a population of organisms that interbred, it might become more common than any other allele. As time passes, that could mean that the number of black moths within the population could increase. The same is true for many other characteristics--including morphology and behavior--that vary among populations of organisms.

It is easier to see evolution when the species, like bacteria, has a high generation turnover. Since 1988, Richard Lenski, 에볼루션 룰렛 a biologist, has tracked twelve populations of E.coli that descend from one strain. Samples from each population were taken regularly, and more than 500.000 generations of E.coli have been observed to have passed.

Lenski's research has revealed that mutations can alter the rate at which change occurs and the efficiency at which a population reproduces. It also shows that evolution takes time, a fact that is difficult for some to accept.

Microevolution is also evident in the fact that mosquito genes for pesticide resistance are more common in populations where insecticides have been used. This is because the use of pesticides creates a selective pressure that favors individuals with resistant genotypes.

The speed of evolution taking place has led to a growing appreciation of its importance in a world shaped by human activity, including climate change, pollution and the loss of habitats that hinder the species from adapting. Understanding evolution can help us make smarter decisions regarding the future of our planet, and the life of its inhabitants.
