World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and boost additional stats.
Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's base stats increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the variety of perks that need to be altered to upgrade an item.
The level of an item is a widely used measurement of power and is visible on all tooltips of items. It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is capped at an lower level). Players can see their average item level in their character sheet.
When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the levels of the item. It's a sign of the item's damage and its quality. The item upgrader kit level can also be used to evaluate items when evaluating the inventory of a vendor.
On PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are various theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory states that the item level is determined by an equation that determines how valuable an item's stats actually are. It takes into account the fact that various perks have different value, and also that sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.
This isn't the only factor that affects the ilvl of an item. The level of the area where the item dropped can also alter its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have a higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses them in a variety of ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to a single weapon and to motivate them to try out other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves enhanced by the player's level.
Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item for instance, will only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.
Another way to change the stats of an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and they come in all shapes and sizes. The affixes can be used to give the item extra damage, or give a specific ability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.
All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount of gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling.
Players can choose to upgrade an item by a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However every item will include at least one stat in that range unless they are an exclusive item, or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll attaches, or select which stats to increase. Similar to the base equipment, this must be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items as well as the properties created by loot and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial in the early game, because players tend to put the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability which increases with each level of the item and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140.
Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shop or created using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Item upgrades are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..
The success of an item upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
