Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They are prone to becoming bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. If not properly socialized macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only an excellent pet, but is also a great pet for children.
Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a distraction for those living close by. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls which can be annoying to those who live in condos or apartments.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining sex. Once sex has been determined, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and realize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative, on a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid daily.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, especially Lolita blue & gold macaw. The 57-year old orca was taken from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is in danger, she lives in a tank that some believe is too small.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who wish to see her released back into the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a vulnerable state.
The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current state of health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging quickly and her health has declined.
As her captor does not have to disclose this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can swim deep in the water and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
