Furthermore, they were clearly conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their decision to learner-internal factors like their personality and multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors, such as relational advantages. For example, they described how their relationships with professors led to a more relaxed performance in regards to the intercultural and linguistic standards of their university.
However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and consequences that they could face if they flouted the local social norms. They were worried that their native friends might perceive them as "foreignersand consider them unintelligent. This worry was similar to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These findings suggest that native-speakers' pragmatic norms are not the norm for Korean learners. They may remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reassess their applicability in specific situations and in various cultural contexts. This will allow them to better understand the effects of different cultural contexts on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of L2 students.
