World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like crit chance and PvE Damage.
If the weapon's upgrade template is in %, the weapon will be able to gain 3percent of its previous attack damage each time it is upgraded.
Item upgrading costs crests and the item's current level. The cost increases as the item level rises.
Components
Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to provide an extra stat boost or effect when they're used. They can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Certain upgrades also come with specific cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot for them. The item must be at the very least upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be used. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment as well as the non-ascended back items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of that equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.
A boost upgrade is a way to modify the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or by purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals per.

This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much it will increase after a future reset.
The process of upgrading an item can be costly and it's possible that the item will eventually become obsolete, or even break, if the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed when an upgrade fails. This is reduced by the availability of cash shop items to increase or even eliminate the chances of failure, as well as some upgrades that provide the benefit of being reinserted into an item.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to upgrade the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets that are specifically designed for. Glyphs buff the effectiveness of all nodes in the area around them and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We suggest upgrading them as soon as you can to level 15.
In the final game you'll often discover that the best way to improve your gear is by placing Glyphs. They are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded directly to level 15 and provide an enormous boost to your power and radius on the Paragon Board, enabling you to reach higher nodes much faster.

Druids for instance should position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They might be able to place them near their most critical damage nodes.

Certain upgrades can increase their value and allow players to personalize their equipment. A good example of this is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player repeatedly enters and leaves the water (or is able to swim like dolphins). The item can be upgraded many times by increasing the maximum roll each time by 10 increments. This item is extremely valuable in PvP. A well-rolled version can be worth up to 50x the value of the non-upgraded counterpart.

However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

This means that if a weapon gains an increase in its crit chance it will be applied prior to any increase in attack damage. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the item's definition and the value is computed each time an upgrade is applied.
